Time for a correction, AP?

The AP should run a correction to this story that appeared in today’s morning newspaper and in countless other papers around the country. The assertion that Hemings gave birth to children fathered by Thomas Jefferson is almost certainly bogus. Fathered by “a” Jefferson? Perhaps.

According to an authoritative 2012 Wall Street Journal column by Robert F. Turner, a professor at the University of Virginia and editor of “The Jefferson-Hemings Controversy: Report of the Scholars Commission,” 1998 DNA tests did not use genetic material from Thomas Jefferson, but rather suggest that one of more than two dozen Jefferson males may have fathered Hemings’ youngest son, Eston. Turner wrote that there may have been at least seven Jefferson men, including Thomas Jefferson, at Monticello when Eston was conceived in 1807.

“Allegations that the ‘oral history’ of Sally’s descendants identified the president as the father of all of Sally’s children are also incorrect,” Turner wrote. “Eston’s descendants repeatedly acknowledged — before and after the DNA tests — that as children they were told they were not descendants of Thomas Jefferson but rather of an ‘uncle.'”

The most likely candidate, according to Turner, is Jefferson’s younger brother, known at Monticello as “Uncle Randolph.” Randolph, who it was said would “come out among black people, play the fiddle and dance half the night,” was invited to visit Monticello just weeks before Eston’s likely conception.

Turner points out that the first allegations of President Jefferson fathering a child with Hemings’ was published in the Richmond Recorder in September 1802, noting that Hemings’ eldest child was named “Tom.” After Jefferson’s death, a former slave named Thomas Woodson claimed he was that “Tom,” but DNA tests of descendants of Woodson’s disproved this.

That Richmond newspaper story was written by the notorious slanderer James Callender, who was imprisoned under the Sedition Act during John Adams’ term as second president. He admitted writing lies about Adams to get Jefferson elected. In fact he shouted as much in front of the White House when he demanded that Jefferson grant him the job of postmaster of Richmond, Va. The newspaper story apparently was his revenge.

  1. Bill says:

As an editor, you know that there are two likelihoods of a correction by the AP. (a) Slim or (b) none at all.

But good luck on your call for an honest and factual article by the AP.

  2. Athos says:

There is a serious effort to rewrite our history to prove we are systemically racist and basically an evil country that needs to be torn down.

So naturally they tried out that old “Jefferson fathered children through slaves“.

And when RBG died the right was respectful. Leftist immediately talked about burning down the country. Tell me again who are the Extremist?

  3. Rincon says:

Whether or not Jefferson fathered any of Sally Hemmings’ children should be considered irrelevant today anyway. What’s sad is that there is a need to protect his headstone from those who take pettiness to a new level, but alas, our morality has withered. Speaking of which, there was a day when hypocrisy such as that demonstrated by Republicans in the upcoming nomination of a party hack….err, new justice to the Supreme Court would have been roundly condemned by one and all. Today, it is enthusiastically accepted by all partisans that ethics are unnecessary for their tribe. I won’t hold my breath waiting for any of you to repeat the words you wrote at the time of the fatal attack on the right of a President to nominate a new justice when the Senate isn’t packed with his own party members. This is because you knew the words weren’t true when you wrote them.

  4. Athos says:

Cry me a river, Rin. Hypocrisy? Thy name is Democrat. We have the Presidency and the Senate. She should have retired when Harry Greed ran the senate rather than socializing our National Health care.

Morality? Really? Why is abortion your hill to die on? Not all black lives matter to you people, do they?

  5. Anonymous says:

Rincon I suspect when the Nazis were taking over Germany, most of the right wing of the political spectrum simply looked away and instead of publishing news of the day, the focused on dastardly things (which may or may not have been true) written about guys who lived hundreds of years before.

While the true evil in the country was acting to destroy the world.

  6. Anonymous says:

Without rules we become what we purportedly tried to avoid when the government was created; a nation of men rather than a nation of laws.

We all get to decide but be careful what you wish for. It won’t matter in the long run because Trump and his sycophants and silent men and women, are ensuring the destruction of this country each day.

  7. Athos says:

Anny (or is it nyp) I guess it depends on one’s perspective, doesn’t it? Your comment appears to be a threat. If you don’t get what you want (Biden election, Trump defeat) your ilk will burn down the f***ing country, which is why (in your sick little mind) you accuse Trump et al of “…are ensuring the destruction of this country each day.” Merely because we stand up for our constitutional rights.

BLM and Antifa burned down the cities from May 25 till this day. And NO democrat will condemn Antifa (none that I’ve seen that have called them out by name) In fact, you can STILL type antics.com into your search engine and be directed to Joe Biden for president website.

    Ain’t that something?

  8. Athos says:

    It’s antifa.com not antics.com.

  9. Athos says:

Remember. “It’s easy to be a communist in a free country. try being free in a communist country!”

  10. Bil says:

    Nicely said, Athos.
Last time I looked, the Constitution of the United States obligates the President of the United States to name a candidate to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court and requires the Senate to give their advice and consent.

Justice Sotamayor has said that the Court should be at 9 members to avoid problems of a 4-4 split.

It is time for the Democrats to quit their hypocritical caterwauling about this nomination. As one of my Presidents once said, proudly: “Elections have consequences”.

In case you want to verify, check, FLASHBACK: ‘Elections Have Consequences’ | The Daily Caller
“Elections have consequences,” he told then number two Republican Rep. Eric Cantor. “And at the end of the day, I won. So I think on that one I trump you.”

  11. Anonymous says:

    Let me be clear here:

I hope Trump’s candidate gets confirmed in double quick time. It’s clear republicans have the votes to do it.

I’ll also be clear that I hope after the election when democrats control the house the senate and the executive that the democrats do away with the filibuster, expand the number of SC justices, and immediately do away with all other federal courts by dissolving them (along with their current office holders of course) and then reconstituting them as they are of course empowered to do, with nominees specially selected for their hatred of the Republican Party.

Then, for the next 3 years at least (and more after the senate expands the term in office for presidents to be applied retroactively of course) or longer, democrats do all those things that set republicans hair (the ones that still have any) on fire including confiscating all guns, making all abortions legal, taking all tax exempt status away from conservative and religious organizations away, etc. because, as the right wing commentators here have said today even elections have consequences and democrats don’t need to play by any rules cause no rules need apply anymore.

  12. Rincon says:

I think even you guys have to agree that there is no guiding principle by the Republicans regarding the two nominations, except that all’s fair in love, war, and politics. Calling their actions anything but a power grab would be disingenuous at best. Unfortunately, the gloves are off, and turnabout is fair play. If the Republicans do manage to anger enough moderates to grant Democrats the Presidency and control of Congress, then the Democrats have every right to play hard ball and pack the Court with their own peeps by increasing the number of justices as allowed by the Constitution. This means of course, that when the Republicans get the same opportunity in the future, they will also add judges. Some day, the Court may have a hundred judges. I’m just sad that our nation has come to this.

  13. Anonymous says:

Republicans have worked hard to destroy the government and they are certainly getting what they’ve worked for.

Personally I can’t think of a country that has a government capable of being drown in a bathtub that I’d want to live in but that’s just what the right has worked for and sadly are on the verge of achieving but for an obviously grossly bloated useless defense complex that they can pretend constitutes “big gov’ment” for purposes of blasting the damn “liberals”.

All in the span of less than 4 years and these guys say Trumps not one of them.

  14. Athos says:

Boy, we republicans have sure done it now, haven’t we?

This is on you whiney little girlie men. Rinny, you actually agree with Anny on his “fundamentally transforming” America? With your little “get even” wish list, you make Zero look like a piker! (‘course, he and Muchelle my belle would be cheering you on from the estate in Martha’s Vineyard, wouldn’t he?)

And Rinny, I DO NOT agree with your blatant, false statement (“…I think even you guys have to agree that there is no guiding principle by the Republicans regarding the two nominations, except that all’s fair in love, war, and politics…”) You know FULL well that Garland was sent to a REPUBLICAN controlled Senate and would have been roundly rejected by the Mitch Mc Republican majority. And that would have been used as canon fodder in the upcoming election. (You mean, the Republicans weren’t the “Stupid” Party for once?)

Too bad Democrats had to make fools of themselves lying about Kavanaugh (and showing the American people what low lifes you really are!)

And now little babies gonna whine! Just like those fools in Louisville that didn’t get the verdict they wanted. THAT’S THE LEFTIST AMERICAN WAY! DON’T GET WHAT YOU WANT? BURN, LOOT AND KILL!

And now you whine about conservatives possibly ( and that is a BIG IF) having a majority on the Supreme Court, when for the last 60+ years we’ve had a legislature from the bench, let’s make rights out of whole cloth, leftist looney bin Supreme Court and NOT ONCE, did the right riot, burn loot or kill like you fellas do!

Notice all the riots (NOT) done by Republicans when we get dealt a crappy verdict. Which reminds me, Anny……..Last time you idiots had D president and super majority in Congress, how did that work out?

Do you EVER ask yourself WHY you can’t sell the American people your ideas in order to garner a majority? Maybe because your ideas of governance are an anathema to the American Spirit? (See Anny’s 6:03pm post above)

  15. Athos says:

PS. Thank you, Bil! I appreciate the feedback. I seem to remember Zero telling MacShamnesty to “Shut up, you lost, John”, but I could be mis-remembering. Shame we didn’t run Palin as the P back then!

  16. Anonymous says:

Like I said, since its all about power now, I wish the republicans well while they have it; do what you will for as long as you can.

And then, when democrats regain power, I hope they shove all the can for as long as they can, in the faces of those that did what they did for as long as they could.

God Bless America, for as long as it lasts.

  17. People in the streets demanding justice? No they are demanding revenge, because the grand jury followed the law.

  18. Athos says:

What is so strange is that most conservatives I know (and enjoy reading) simply want to be left alone. Yes, we have a strong Judeo/Christian moral compass to guide our decisions in life (some successful, some not so) but generally “live and let live” is our code.

The opposite is true with you elites, Anny. You want to run other peoples lives because of your superior intellect and all knowing powers ( and face it, it makes you feel good to be King!)

So I understand when you project your fears of domination on to us Conservatives. We want the power to be LEFT ALONE, and not dictated to about things we believe are bogus (green new deal, anyone? and hey, let me pick up your college tab, house payment, and give you a “living wage” cause it’s only the “fair” thing to do, don’t cha know?)

Sorry, but WIN in the market place of ideas, fellas. And if we take away your magic “living document” that allows millions of babies to be murdered (nice phrase, abortion) or 6 year olds given sex altering drugs, then go somewhere else that thinks that’s just dandy.

  19. Anonymous says:

    How stupid can you be

was never intended as a personal challenge to every republican in the world.

  20. Athos says:

There’s that clever little saying of yours, petey!

A little more of your projection, huh? After all, all that shooting, fire and destruction last night was either a) mostly peaceful protesting or b) 400 years of pent up justified pay back

or c) part of a communist take over. Nice fist BLM uses in their signage, eh?

I guess you could say “stupid is as stupid does.”

  21. Rincon says:

Most of us would like to be left alone also, Athos. Unfortunately, Republicans don’t believe in that any more than Democrats do. They just don’t want GOVERNMENT to get involved in anything, but they’re quite happy to let other citizens butt into our lives. Some Chinese leader put it embarrassingly well when, in reply to our criticism of their human rights, they replied, “America is in a glass house. What kind of human rights is it when your citizens aren’t safe to walk your streets?” Our third world homicide rate reflects a government that leaves us alone more than those of other, more advanced nations. Do you think that’s a good thing?
Private enterprise won’t leave us alone either. We pay 40% more for our health care than anyone in the world, yet the citizens of 42 other countries live longer than we do. PLEASE. let government interfere with our health care. This nation cannot afford health care from companies whose only motive is greater and greater profits. Show me any other nation that allows companies to charge their own citizens 5 times as much as they charge foreigners. I have an employee who gets insulin from Canada at 1/5 the price charged by American pharmacies. Don’t tell anyone though, because it’s illegal. She’s very glad that the Canadian government interfered with her life!
Of course, shutting down polling places in big cities, gerrymandering, and forcing citizens with serious medical issues or those that are very old to risk their lives in order to vote by making them physically come to a crowded polling place to do so is also “leaving us alone”, right?
Republicans somehow don’t mind government interfering with the lives of women with an unwanted pregnancy, do they? I guess they don’t want to leave EVERYONE alone, do they?
By leaving the rich and powerful alone, Republicans have contributed mightily to a third world income disparity rate in the good ol’ USA. Social mobility has also declined greatly since the ’80’s in this country, mainly because government is, “leaving us alone”.
Government at the federal level certainly has left us alone to contend with COVID 19. Their do nothing strategy, if you can call that a strategy, has given us a death rate far higher than that of those whose governments didn’t leave their citizens alone.
Government certainly doesn’t leave us alone when it comes to putting our citizens in prison. We have the second highest incarceration rate in the world. Do you really think Republicans have no responsibility for that?
I could go on a lot longer, but you’ve probably stopped reading by now. Hopefully though, you get the idea.

  22. Athos says:

Wow. I meant to check on this site to ask if Tom was OK (no topics for a while?) but then I read Rin-Tin-Tin’s post and was just shocked. What happened to you Rinny? Has all the Covid Isolation and fear mongering in Pritzkerville got ya daffy?

Let’s start with “I’m from the government and I’m here to help”. Do you have ANY government run organization that isn’t a complete clusterf***? Here’s an observation for you…. Most Democrat politicians I’ve observed in my 65+years in this country, want to run our lives so they can hob knob with the rich and famous (ex prez O did buy a little get a way on Martha’s Vineyard, didn’t he?) AND get to tell people (at the point of a gun) what to do. It gets them off.

In our state (Nevada) we have an evil little suck up that places mask mandates on PEOPLE THAT WORK OUTSIDE! and sends spies to try and catch people not wearing their mask properly so THE STATE OF NEVADA CAN FINE THE BUSINESS! And just so I’m being clear, our rulers are NOT republicans, Rin.

Most Republican pols just want to steal enough money to retire to some country club and golf till they die. AND THAT’S why they hate Trump, also! He wants to DRAIN THE SWAMP. You brought up prescription drug companies over-charging Americans. You know who’s working to change that don’t you? (Hint, his initials are DONALD TRUMP)

And Polling places to kill people with Kung-Flu? Really? I guess you haven’t been to a grocery store for a long time, huh? And haven’t you checked out the latest W.H.O. numbers? It turns out that COVID 19 has a death rate of 0.13% (750,000,000 world wide contracted the disease, 1 million dead). Does that number look familiar? Could it be the same death rate of seasonal flu? Did we shut everything down (including voting in person) for the seasonal flu, Rin? And that’s why the W.H.O. is preaching AGAINST lockdowns (6 months late, I may add!)

“Republicans somehow don’t mind government interfering with the lives of women with an unwanted pregnancy, do they?” Two things. 1) of the roughly 800,000 murders of children in the womb per year, what percent are from rapes, and/or done to save the life of the mother? and 2)it’s not a Republican thing, Rin, IT’S A CHRISTIAN THING, which actually used to encompass BOTH parties, (am I right, Tom?)

Of the top 10 richest men in this country, Rin, how many would you guess are republicans? Hmmm? In the 80s, I was in the lowest quintile (poor choices, no savings ability) and today my wife and I are in the top quintile (just barely;) And I’m not in politics! But I did come to Las Vegas late 80s which was a very opportunistic time!

If you want LESS crime, you need to punish the CRIMINALS, NOT THE VICTIMS! You don’t disband the police, or have no bail policies for people arrested and REDUCE CRIME. And do you have any idea what percentage of our prison population is comprised of illegal aliens? (26 to 30% according to the DOJ). Whose policy is to let all these illegal aliens live off our country, Rin? I’ll give you a big hint….look who governs in Sanctuary Cities.

And for my last point. I was talking to a friend from New York about how our governor will go down as the “Man that Killed Las Vegas”. He told me “it’s a shame you don’t have our governor, cause he’s the best!” I couldn’t believe it! He was actually talking about NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo! NY has double the deaths than the next highest state (and more than 3 times the deaths of Illinois – your state Rin). And the lock downs continue! And the sick people sent back to nursing homes that killed who knows how many thousand! And none of this phased my friend (I think he got angry with me for pointing this out) I’ll say ONE thing Cuomo has going for himself – a REAL GOOD PR campaign, right?

Well, I really appreciate the ability to put this down (and get it out of my system) anonymously. Conservatives don’t “key” the cars of people with Biden bumperstickers, nor do we burn loot and destroy our political opponents business, homes or lives. We can actually stand on our ideas and don’t have to lie and deny and pass the bill to know what’s in the bill. Of course a Biden/Harris administration is going to “pack the court” (increase the number of justices to gain a majority in the Supreme Court). Abortion MUST BE PROTECTED! don’t cha know?

Thanks for being there for us, Tom. Can’t do this at the RJ anymore, can we?

  23. Athos says:

Totally forgot that when I went to the bank yesterday, it was closed ’cause it was “National Indigenous People Day”! We’re so “woke” we’re doomed. (So I headed down to the Knights of Columbus Hall and drank my self “indigenous”!)

  24. Bill says:

Hope that you all were watching the confirmation hearing today. Justice Barrett showed intelligence, class and a grasp of the subject matter, all without notes. Many of the Democrat Senators looked even dumber and more partisan than usual. Senator Hirono is the probable dumb and demeaning question winner though when she asked the nominee, a sitting Appellate Justice, as follows: “Since you became a legal adult, have you ever made unwanted requests for sexual favors or committed any verbal or physical harassment or assault of a sexual nature ..”

Stupid. Demeaning. Indefensible. Classless. On national television and with Justice Barrett’s children in the room.

Since Justice Barrett has 7 children it might have been better for Mazie to ask her if she had been a victim instead of a perpetrator.

  25. Athos says:

I didn’t see her answer, Bill, but maybe Hirono has one of Christine Blasey Ford’s many sisters on retainer. When I watch this “from another reality” pontificating from these honorable (?) public servants I’m sickened. I get it…their belief is “ends justify the means” but do people honestly believe the garbage they (Dem Sen) spew?

Rinny? Anny? can you help me out here? Do you really believe Don Trump SAID that he want ACB on the court to confirm his election (if need be)? As if she’s a Trump pawn?

And do you fellas believe (as Spartacus Booker) that Trump has never condemned White Supremacist?

And Rinny, and Anny, tell me you aren’t put off by the condescending antics of K. Harris? Talk about being cluelessly in over your head!

    Inquiring minds want to know.

  26. Athos says:

    Tom, are you doing OK?

  27. I’m fine. Just nothing has stuck me as really needing my comments of late.

  28. Anonymous says:

    Paraphrasing here:

How well are non-main stream media (and main stream media for that matter) covering the issue of trumps health?

I know it’s been four years but I remember a time when extra coughs by one particular candidate was cause for an entire piece here regarding the health of that candidate.

Now we have another candidate who has not only been admitted for treatment recently to ward off the plague, but has purportedly had several strokes. His gait, slurred speech and just plain old wackiness surely bring into question how healthy he is, but around here….crickets.

  29. Bill says:

With all the mental lapses and disorientation that Biden has, even from his controlled environment cellar, the focus of the media today on candidate health should be on Uncle Joe. Had DJT made even one gaffe as to what office he was running for, where he was or what the Mitt Romney’s name was, the Democrats and above all the media would be calling for an Article 25, Incapacity proceeding.

  30. Anonymous says:

  31. Anonymous says:

But seriously folks this is yet another thing that just is constantly confounded about the right; for four years they’ve excused every obscene thing Trump has said by claiming that while they don’t agree with the things he says, something something something, but yet let another human being on earth say something and THAT is what they want to point out.

Man do they got some retribution coming.

  32. Bill says:

Glad to see you are religious. Or is it simply that you are taking the Lord’s place? Deuteronomy 32:35 Vengeance is Mine…

Why is it you always heaping vindictive upon those that do not share your views? Are you a mean and little person?

You seem to pigeon-hole me as a member of the “Right” whatever that is these days. As for myself, I am unaware that I am a member of any group or organization named the”Right”. I have always thought of myself as a moderate conservative or perhaps a conservative moderate.

Trump is not really a member of the “Right” or even a true “conservative.” He is more of a conservative leaning Populist.

There are some matters of style of his that I do not approve, yet I do approve of many if not most of his policies.

I do particularly like the fact that Trump was a rich man who decided to get into politics.

Joe Biden went into politics and got rich. He also made sure his family did too, like Hunter & Joe’s brothers.

That is not the way public service is supposed to work.

  33. Anonymous says:

Please quote the part of what was written that pigeon-holed you as a member of the right, or the left, or the center.

And no, Trump is not a member of the right, he’s simply evil, in all ways, and in every thing he says and does. The Good Book I read says this:

““But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.”

So, from my reading, anyone associating with the guy grabbing ’em by the pu$$y, is seemingly ignoring the word of the Book. Maybe its me but that seems wrong.

And, as for how politics is supposed to work, perhaps you’d care to explain if this is how its supposed to work, at least in this country:

“According to the Constitution, I get to do whatever I want”, or “The thing I like to do first is grab the guns, and worry about due process later” or ten thousand and one other things that this evil has said and done for 4 years while “good men” like yourself remain silent because…

  34. Debra Saunders has story today reporting on that NY Post story about how the Biden’s enriched themselves. Funny, Biden bragged about bribing the Ukrainians to fire a prosecutor, but Trump got impeached for asking the Ukrainians to look into it.

  35. The White House released a summary of the conversation between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which Trump told the Ukrainian leader to work with Attorney General William Barr and Rudy Giuliani to find out what happened between the Bidens and a Ukrainian prosecutor. “There’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great,” Trump told Zelensky, according to the summary. “Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it … It sounds horrible to me.”

  36. Anonymous says:

Good to see you finally found something that interested you enough to write about Thomas!

Sure wish it would have been something about how corrupt Trump is, and has been, and how it means the likely end of our beloved republican but hey, you can’t always get what you want.

    Some people say

  37. Athos says:

“Arabic word “covfefe” and it’s meaning “I will stand up.” Of course this was done after Trump returned from Saudi Arabia.

Your scripture readings are convenient, Anny. “Wolf in sheep’s clothing comes to mind”. I think Bill put it best. Let’s see the tax returns of all those rich politicians that went to DC poor (like our very own boy from Searchlight!)

Just watching the unbridled hatred coming from career politicians (and MSM pundits) is worth 4 more years of Trump! I’m still waiting for the perp walks!!
