Obama is correct: Desperation can give rise to dangerous ideologies

When he’s right, he’s right.

Obama on Wednesday during a televised interview linked climate change to the rise of dangerous ideologies.

“What we know is that — as human beings are placed under strain, then bad things happen,” the president  said. “And, you know, if you look at world history, whenever people are desperate, when people start lacking food, when people — are not able to make a living or take care of their families — that’s when ideologies arise that are dangerous.”

Though the cause was economic collapse and not climate change, desperate people lacking food and jobs is what gave us the New Deal and 85 years of progressive erosion of federalism.

Odd that unbridled capitalism led to an economic collapse, and that the (gasp) socialist reforms enacted to address that most heinous form of economics, saved the country.

Odd, only in the sense that capitalists don’t seem to understand how and why, that it happened.

The poor masses of mankind wil not die quietly while the few wealthiest live in luxury.

Why is this so difficult to grasp?

  2. Winston Smith says:

Nice try, Patrick, but it was the manipulation of the money supply by the fascist/globalist banksters that caused the Great Depression….via the unconstitutional Federal Reserve, of course.

Those banksters are indeed the wealthiest few, but they used government power to get there…

  3. Patrick says:

Winston we will have to disagree I suppose.

But even “monetary economists” don’t claim the Great Depression was CAUSED by the Federal Reserve, merely that their policy extended it.

You’re sorta on your own here.

  4. Connie Foust says:

There has never been another time in my life that I sense so much social unrest. Conservatives are done with Progressive policies that have eroded our Constitution and caused the break down in society as a whole. The sooner we all get back to being American’s first and stop blaming the rich, the poor, etc. The better off we will be. As a unified force against evil we can defeat those who seek to kill us.

  5. Murray Rothbard:

The chief impact of the Great Depression on American
thought was universal acceptance of the view that “laissez-faire
capitalism” was to blame. The common opinion—among economists
and the lay public alike—holds that “Unreconstructed
Capitalism” prevailed during the 1920s, and that the tragic depression
shows that old-fashioned laissez-faire can work no longer. It
had always brought instability and depression during the nineteenth
century; but now it was getting worse and becoming
absolutely intolerable. The government must step in to stabilize
the economy and iron out the business cycle. …

Yet, on closer analysis, the common reaction is by no means
self-evident. It rests, in fact, on an unproven assumption—the
assumption that business cycles in general, and depressions in particular,
arise from the depths of the free-market, capitalist economy.
If we then assume that the business cycle stems from—is
“endogenous” to—the free market, then the common reaction
    seems plausible. …

Yet there is another and conflicting tradition of economic
thought—now acknowledged by only a few economists, and by
almost none of the public. This view holds that business cycles and
depressions stem from disturbances generated in the market by
monetary intervention. The monetary theory holds that money and
credit-expansion, launched by the banking system, causes booms
    and busts. …

  6. Patrick says:

Murray mussed have missed out on the booms and busts which happened long before any “monetary intervention”.

Course, I’m sure he’d blame the government even then, or possibly earlier “globalists”, or the Rothchilds, or something.

“My mother used to say Rosanna Rosanna Dana….it’s always something”

  7. Indeed…the Climate Change hoax exhibits rampant desperation…desperation for control and extremely large amounts of tribute paid into their coffers.

Conservatives don’t really create a lot of problems. Their approach is to ignore problems that already exist. Their answer to violent crime is,,,um…just what is it? They delayed the removal of lead from paint and gasoline for decades, despite abundant evidence of the harm done. They fought tooth and nail supporting the right of tobacco companies to promote the use of their poisonous product, enabling the self massacre of millions. They delayed the cleanup of our water and air, despite the obvious need. They promote obesity by supporting the subsidies for high calorie crops, and fighting any government action towards addressing the obesity epidemic that is upon us. This will cost us trillions as these fatties age and become prematurely infirm. They also support enormous tax break and some very major subsidies for fossil fuel companies. Their solution for poverty is to do nothing.

They support the idea of denying people insurance for preexisting conditions which, of course, tends to negate the purpose of insurance in the first place. They fight to allow farmers to continue the use of large amounts of antibiotics in healthy farm animals, even though Europe has already shown that vastly smaller quantities can be used economically. This one is coming to get us now. 25% of all cultured bacterial infections in New Delhi this year are resistant to every known antibiotic. I believe that is unprecedented. Coming soon to a hospital near you.

Conservatives also fought hard for “separate but equal” facilities so white people could avoid the unpleasantness of associating with black people. They like to bring out the military for every foreign policy problem, which keeps multiplying our problems. I can go on a lot longer, but you catch my drift. Of course, now the obstructionism focuses on global warming. As with all of these other issues where their moral bankruptcy has caused us great harm, they won’t be embarrassed by being wrong about that one either.

Conservatives ARE very active in trying to control the scourge of drugs that infests our country. Problem is, they continue to embrace a means of dealing with it that has failed for the last 70 years and arguably does more harm than good.

Your track record sucks. Might want to consider changing teams So tell me, just what problems have been solved by Conservatives in the past 50 years or so?

  9. Do you feel better now?

  10. Rincon says:

Thanks for at least reading it, Brien. Good to vent the spleen now and then.

Your link is pretty funny in an unintended way. His claim seems to be that anyone who is being paid to examine global warming considers it an important issue. This only leaves the rare professional skeptic (some who worked for the tobacco industry in the dark ages) and the amateur “experts” denying it. In other words, almost every expert agrees. That’s what Liberals have been saying for years. Nice of him to notice.
