Will you allow the Democrats to herd you into a corral?

Democrats discriminate.

And I mean that in the most pejorative sense of the word. Not in the sense that one has discriminating tastes — prefers the symphony to heavy metal.

I mean Democrats herd people into niches and classify and identify and make assumptions about people, not by their level of discernment and powers of rational thought and deduction, but by their skin color, age, gender and ethnicity.

In their worldview a black conservative is an oxymoron. Clarence Thomas, Walter E. Williams and Thomas Sowell are mutations. An Hispanic Republican is a race traitor who wants to turn off the welfare to the ghetto and deny universal amnesty to every drug mule and coyote to ever climb a border fence or wade the Rio Grande. A female Republican is just a man in drag who really wants to keep the gender in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant and ignorant of what the word contraceptive means.

The way to power in the mind of a Democrat is to pander to the group, not appeal to reason.

Take Harry Reid as a classic, bumbling example.

In the book “Game Change,” Harry was quoted as remarking with considerable amazement about candidate Obama being “light-skinned” and having “no Negro dialect unless he wanted to have one” and “Reid was convinced, in fact, that Obama’s race would help him more than hurt him in a bid for the Democratic nomination.”

And who can forget Harry’s classic befuddlement:

“I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican, OK. Do I need to say more?”

Such pigeon-holing by the Democrats might explain why Mitt Romney, speaking at the University of Chicago earlier this week, felt the need to apologize in advance for his remarks:

“I joke, and I don’t mean to be flip with this — because I actually see truth in it — I don’t see how a young American can vote for a Democrat.

“I apologize for being so offensive at saying that, but I catch your attention. But I mean, in the humor, there’s some truth there. And I say that for this reason: that party is focused on providing more and more benefits to my generation, and amounting trillion-dollar annual deficits my generation will never pay for.

“My party is consumed with the idea of getting federal spending down and creating economic growth and opportunity so we can balance our budget and stop putting these debts on you. …

“These debts are not frightening to people my age, because we’ll be gone.”

I fail to see the need to apologize, because all people are young at some point and all people have the opportunity to grow old. Take my word for it.

It reminds me of what I said to a woman — probably 20 years my junior — in line at the Clark Country Republican Central Committee
meeting last night when she lamented the fact her college-age daughter is an active recruiter for the Democratic Party. I paraphrased Winston Churchill’s classic remark: “If you’re not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you’re not a conservative at forty you have no brain.”

There are generation gaps and gender gaps and even ethnic and class and wealth gaps, but people can change their minds and their philosophy and their parties and their station in life — if they are not trapped by government imposed joblessness, hopelessness and welfare dependency.

Democrats remain mired in identity politics. Now, who is the racist? Who has declared a war on women? And who is offering a brighter future to our youth?

Perhaps young people reject Republicans because the Republicans are committed to repealing the law that allows them to stay on their parent’s health insurance plan after college.

Or, perhaps it is because Republicans oppose President Obama’s reforms of the student loan system.

Or, perhaps it is because Republicans want to give people’s bosses the right to decide whether or not they can get insurance coverage for IUDs and birth control pills.

Or, perhaps it is because Republicans voted to slash Pell Grants.

Nah, it must be because young people aren’t as wise as Thomas Mitchell.

  2. I think Mitt Romney already answered those questions, Petey. If young people want handouts that their children will have to pay for, I guess they should vote for Obama. Isn’t that cutting off your nose to spite your face?

I think student loans, health insurance for college grads, insurance coverage for reproductive health, Pell Grants — all the things that you and your fellow Republicans call “handouts” — should be paid for. I suggest we do so by returning to the tax rates we had in place under that notorious Bolshevik Bill Clinton.

  4. Yes, they should be paid for by those who receive them.
