An inconvenient truth: No warming in 15 years

Warming?

The UK’s Daily Mail reported this week that, according to the Met Office and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit, the planet has not warmed by one jot for the past 15 years.

In fact, the planet might be headed into a mini-Ice Age, the paper reports.

“We’re now well into the second decade of the pause,” the Mail quoted Benny Peiser, director of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, as saying. “If we don’t see convincing evidence of global warming by 2015, it will start to become clear whether the models are bunk. And, if they are, the implications for some scientists could be very serious.”

Dr Nicola Scafetta of Duke University in North Carolina was quoted as saying, “If temperatures continue to stay flat or start to cool again, the divergence between the models and recorded data will eventually become so great that the whole scientific community will question the current theories.”

Tell me again, why do we need to spend more on windmills and solar panels?

When they are shown wrong again this time unable to debunk it get ready to hear:

No no no no, you don’t understand! Its the CO2 that is PREVENTING the warming, we have to stop all fossil fuel use RIGHT NOW to prevent the coming ICE AGE. Thats what we have been saying all along! Give all your money too we need it to battle poverty!

  2. Never let a crisis go to waste, and, if you don’t a crisis, invent one.

this is an unintentionally funny post. Mr. Mitchell takes the single warmest year on record, and then decides to use it as a baseline. If you measured from any year other than the one Mr. Mitchell (and the Daily Mail) cherry-picked, the contention about temperture trends would fall apart.
The British Meteorological Office has issued a statement protesting the Daily Mail’s distortions of its climate data. According to the statement: “what is absolutely clear is that we have continued to see a trend of warming, with the decade of 2000-2009 being clearly the warmest in the instrumental record going back to 1850. Depending on which temperature records you use, 2010 was the warmest year on record for NOAA NCDC and NASA GISS, and the second warmest on record in HadCRUT3.”
As for the “ice age” stuff, here is what the Met Office says:
“although solar output is likely to reduce over the next 90 years this will not substantially delay expected increases in global temperatures caused by greenhouse gases. The study found that the expected decrease in solar activity would only most likely cause a reduction in global temperatures of 0.08 °C. This compares to an expected warming of about 2.5 °C over the same period due to greenhouse gases.”

And if the models don’t pan out:

    Baffle them with bottom sediment.

  5. Thanks for the chuckle, Steve.

I’m glad Mr. Mitchell is so sanguine about climate change.

No, you are from the Pollyana School, with an advanced studies degree in hiding one’s head in the sand.

Change is the only thing stable in climate.
Its been doing this since before I was born and it will be changing long after I am gone.

Humans want to scare me into things I would not otherwise be worried about. Its human influence I cannot allow to cause me any excess concern.
Especially when all the dire warnings are not panning out AND all the new dire warnings are 100 years out.
This crying of “wolf” has been going on for 40 years with none of the horrible things occuring at all. (Unless you think Al Gore in the mansion by the sea a horrible thing. He sure knows how to help the cause.)

I have much better things to concern myself with.

I will make my house payment, hope my employer exits chapt 11 with enough left over to keep the shareholders somewhat solvent and I can hold onto a future again.

I just can’t allow something that MAY happen 100 years from now, worry me today. Thank-you for the scare tactics.

If we weren’t so broke, this would be funny.

Oh wait. Because we chase at windmills (and Harry THE CROOK and the boys can siphon off a few million to stash in their bank accounts) WE ARE BROKE.

  14. Athos, it’s part of the BIG plan….keep the honest folks BROKE!

  15. We are broke. They aren’t.
