Actually, I'm not young. Haven't been young for about 25 years. And if advertisers didn't believe that their ads could affect relationships between the sexes, they'd probably stop using heteronormative sexual imagery to sell things that have nothing to do with sex.

Not that Juicy Lucy would be sexual to anyone who doesn't think that sex involves dividing the female body up into cuts of meat...

And, btw, the Rebel Yell will be publishing a special supplement devoted to the discussion (from multiple perspectives) of the ad and their decision to run it. Isn't that silly? Discussion about culture, interpretation, and social justice at an American university. Boy! What will those crazy kids do next?

Thomas: Thanks for mentioning my "newshound" screed concerning Harry Reid and the Las Vegas Review-Journal. You're right . . . I just had to say it. Seemed apropos. Well, of course newspapers no longer buy ink by the barrel, but one can figure the barrel equivalent of a tanker truck, and the original wording sounds pithier, I think. A generation or so from now, the saying will have to be updated to something like, "Never pick a fight with someone who buys bandwidth by the terabyte."

I like someone who amuses me, Mr. Thomas, and you do. Yes, among the things I do is teach and consult. I teach New Media Business at a graduate school of journalism. So, what grade do you think an undergraduate would get if he'd submitted this column at a J-School?

I'm glad you googled me. You're learning to do some journalistic research. I'll omit correcting all the gaps in your research, but just point out the major canyons:

Had you spent a few minutes googling New Century Network (try Business Week's stories about it), then you'd start to realize that it was anything but "a restraint-of-trade-law-busting coalition."

Had you googled me a bit more, you'd see that I'm an adjunct professor - meaning I work in the real world and teach in my spare time. I'm a former reporter, editor, daily newspaper publisher, and executive for the old UPI, Reuters, and News Corporation. People hire me for knowledge about how newspapers must adapt to changing times.

Skin in your game? Oh, I think so. Unlike you, I'm not hired staff. I own a daily in Connecticut and have for more 30 years. I've got my skin truly at risk in this game.

Does that skin give me any better knowledge about whether the rules changed in the past ten years? Time will tell. Maybe you're right or maybe I am. But folks have chosen me for advice. Folks like the World Association of Newspapers and Ifra, whose annual 'Beyond the Printed Word' conference I've co-chaired and co-moderated. People like the American Society of Newspaper Editors and also at Editor & Publisher magazine, a both of whose conferences in several years I've spoken. I'll bet my stack of chips against yours that the rules haven't changed in ten years. If you don't like how your newspaper's content is being used on th Web, simply get out of the game, rather than crying out for the laws to be amended to protect your business (protectionism).

Please see my comments on Mr. Siegel's NewsaperProject blog (can't comment at E&P). He doesn't explore his own self-interest: He sells Parade to newspapers; everytime one dies or cuts back, he loses a customer. He doesn't mention that he and I worked together at Advance for 12 years or that I still consult to his employer... on newspapers. As a journalism professor, I now make a fraction of what I did as an executive at his company and I do that because I care about the advance of journalism. He mischaracterizes me to the point of defamation.

Your comments are very one-sided with no logical sense, get a life. Proud of ourselves for what? I'll tell you one out of many reasons: getting an education that entitles us to better paying jobs while people like you work at McDonalds, organzing a successful event that has received national attention. Next time get your facts straight. Just because you are a loser and never went to college, doesn't mean you can spread your biased views.

While I agree that a rally is not as effective as writing letters directly to legislators, this was a good starting point for Nevada higher ed students, who are normally motivated to do little more than occasionally show up to classes in between partying and working to pay for said classes. I wouldn't undercut the spirit behind the rally, regardless of its effectiveness.
